There are no "best" weapons for any profession. It all comes down to what you need for the build you're running.

If you mean the skin of the item (what it looks like), its all a matter of taste.

Most expensive skins I would say in descending order are Dryad, Silverwing, Kinsayer & Stormbow.

In terms usefulness for general PvE I prefer a sundering-fortitude-15/50 longbow, mainly for barrage.

As has been said, there is no "best" weapon for a Ranger. Especially if you mean stats-wise. Once you've gotten to "max" stats for a weapon, there is nothing better. Other than that, there are more desirable "skins", based mostly on looks and rarity.

On the other hand, if you are asking which sort of weapon is best for a Ranger, I'd say either a Recurve Bow or a Shortbow, although you'll find Rangers using all sorts of oddball weapons like daggers or spears.

Recurve - Most common, medium range, good for interrupting
Longbow - long range, slow refire rate, best for pulling
Flatbow - quick refire, long range, but high arc/slow arrow travel time - best used with Favorable Winds or Read the Wind.
Shortbow - my favorite, short range, quick refire, almost as good for interrupting as a Recurve. Has the incidental effect of ensuring that your Heroes get close enough to trigger attacking.

You could do a lot better using a vamp recurve. Or even zealous to fuel that Frenzy or whatever. Longbows are a bit slower than recurves and sundercrap isn't named sundercrap for no reason.

No such thing as "best", my q9 Silverwing cost me 100 ectos, and it is no better than a 2k green.

Use Vampiric, Zealous, along with other bows for Crippling etc.

I prefer +5 on most bows, and usually a fort mod to go along with them.

Always use q9 for a ranger, and carry 5 or so bows to suit situations (I have Charr Slaying on one bow for example).

It's hard to answer that one until you can identify your play style. and how you like to engage.
some good rules of thumb however is the following:
1 longbow with sundering mod for pulling. (always have this)

1 Recurve bow if interrupting. Bring poisonous or barbed if using preparations that inflict these conditions. Recommend this weapon for PvP, and for areas with no mobs and powerful skills that you want to interrupt.

1 Flatbow with either Vampiric or Zealous Mod. This won't be much use until you gain the elite skill Barrage, which will allow you to do massive damage to groups and mobs, while either doing extra damage with the vamp mod or retaining a lot of energy with the zealous. You could also set up as a "turret ranger" by using Read The Wind and Favorable Winds along with some direct damage single shot skills. I recommend Expert's Dexterity as your elite with a turret build.

1 Shortbow with elemental mod and fortitude grip. Lightning is a good default elemental string, but I recommend icy for destroyers in EotN and fire for the Shiverpeaks areas. Ebon is pretty good against human warriors in PvP, but will not do much good against earth elementals in Nightfall.

For pulling, always have a flatbow. They have a high arch, so they are the most useful.

For barraging, I use a Recurve bow, because i find the Attack Speed is just right to spam it.

For playing turret ranger, I bring a flatbow if using read the wind or shortbow if using expert's desterity. You can do huge damage with turret rangers.

If you are only using a longbow for pulling, then it doesn't matter what the stats are, except that you would want a grip such as +30 health or +5 armor.

I wouldn't recommend ever using a Flatbow without Favorable Winds or Read the Wind. I wouldn't recommend FW unless you are in a group with other rangers.

Unless you have a build based around some elemental damage, it's not worthwhile to simply have an elemental string. You would need a large number of bows with different strings for different areas.
If you don't have an elemental build you are better off with sundering, vamp, or zealous - or Silencing if you are causing daze.

Side note, condition extending strings like Silencing and Crippling also do their job when you apply the condition with something other then the bow, for instance, Technobabble or "You Move Like A Dwarf!"

I got a vampire recurve for general usage, a flatbow for turreting/barragepet, a sundering recurve (as idleing weapon) and a zealous recurve as bows.
Then i have a spear for funs, a dagger for funs, a hammer for bunnythumper, a staff for spiritspam (works like a charm on ranger thanks to the reduced costs by dexterity) and trapping, and a bloodset for touchranger.

And i do use them all quite a lot, since i'm so bored i change almost for every quest/town my build ^^

im now waiting for someone to ask "whats the best armor" - in gw there is none of the following that are best - armor , all weapons in general , professions.
Armor and weapons are usually governed by the build(s) that ppl use - tho most cases armor is the players own preference .
If you took 100 players and asked them which is best etc you will get a multitude of answers.
The biggest mistake a player can make with weapons is getting set on a certain weapon then finding out your build doesnt use it ( unless your a weapon collector ).
Also with costumes around these days it doesnt matter if your wearing 5k armor or obby armor as you dont see armor when costumed up.

I can never see why ppl want certain skins etc - the only ppl who see the weapons in action is your team ( if pugged ) or yourself and out of the many guild teams ive been in i cant say ive stopped to watch someones weapon or pay any attention as im too busy trying to kill things before they kill me lol.And Venganza summed it up with his comment about his 100 ecto silverwing and 2k green and you could even say instead of 2k green a simple purple weapon.

Purple weapons are usually not max. And some skins are plain ugly in my eyes, there is no way my main ranger is going to use the ascalon bow skin while I have enough gold to buy something useful at a crafter (or on the market - didn't know they dropped proces so low).

The only rare skin I appreciate is the Dryad skin, beyond that, feathered and composite styles have my preference.

People buy expensive, "elite"-looking weapons because it's a role playing game, so you role play that your character has a rarer-than-average arsenal because being typical is not cool. The look matters for aesthetics, but the reason a gold is more expensive than an identical green/purple is sheer exclusivity, which only matters in most peoples' heads but that's reason enough in an RPG isn't it.
